Dentures
Dentures for replacing a full set of teeth are called full dentures. To replace teeth in the upper jaw, these dentures include a flesh-colored acrylic base that covers the gums and the roof of the mouth, allowing an entire set of false teeth to sit firmly. Full dentures for the lower mouth are similar, but the acrylic base is shaped like a horseshoe to avoid covering the tongue. Prior to fitting full dentures, the dentist removes any remaining teeth. The jawbone reacts to this process slowly, reshaping over time. For a perfect fit, we may in fact wait several months before fabricating a new denture. Because the patient has no teeth during this time, however, we will fabricate an immediate replacement to keep you comfortable in the interim
Partial Dentures
Removable partial dentures usually consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases. Depending on your needs, we will design a partial denture for you. A partial denture may have a metal framework and clasps that connect to your teeth, or they can have other connectors that are more natural looking
Over Dentures
By far the most retentive dentures are OVERDENTURES which are replacement teeth retained by dental implants. Overdentures were developed to help both patients regain a quality of life, which most likely has been missing since they lost their teeth.
Benefits of overdentures:
Promotes Better Digestion: Poor fitting dentures are often held in by using adhesives. Overdentures utilize dental implants, and are more stable. Improved stability allows you to chew food more thoroughly, helping your stomach break down food more efficiently, and absorb more nutrients.
Slows Bone Loss by Stimulating the Bone in your Jaw. Whether your overdenture is retained by remaining natural teeth or by dental implants, it will continue to stimulate your jawbone when you eat/chew. This stimulation will slow or even stop the resorption (shrinkage) process that is natural when teeth are missing
Helps Retain Your Facial Features and Structure: The natural process of resorption (shrinkage) that occurs when you have an unhealthy or under-stimulated jaw as a result of missing teeth can, throughout time, cause the distance between your nose and your chin to shrink. This shrinking can make your face look “sunken-in”.
Dentures Worn on the Upper and Lower Jaw are more Comfortable. When your overdenture is retained with implants it fits more securely. This fit also increases the stability of the overdenture reducing or even eliminating, unnecessary movement during chewing and talking. The most important advantage is that they increase your quality of life.
